Why teams upgrade from a traditional VMS

Give the category its due first, because plenty of these systems are not the problem. A well-run VMS records every camera, keeps the footage for as long as the policy says, and hands an operator clean playback. It runs on your own servers under your own control, it does not depend on anyone's cloud, and if the requirement genuinely is a dependable archive then replacing it is a solution looking for a problem. Most estates that upgrade do so because something else changed, not because the recorder failed.

The first reason is that the archive stops being the product. Recording answers what happened, once somebody knows where to look and has time to look. It does not tell you that a dock trailer has been sitting for forty minutes, that a fire door was propped at 02:00, that PPE compliance drops on the night shift, or that the same vehicle has circled the lot three times this week.
